i’m simon. and i’m karlotta. and we’re taking you to the vocational orientation programme’s workshop days, where we test out various occupational fields for you. *music* how does plaster get on a house wall, airbrush on a fuel tank, and what’s the story with insulation? i don’t know, but i hope to find out today as we learn about painting and decorating. this is a truly creative occupational field that involves far more than just renovation work.
painting and decorating requires artistic skills, too. there are lots of techniques and methods to learn, as master painter and trainer daniel simchen will demonstrate. we’re going to get our hands a bit dirty. just a bit. it’s part of the job and there’s no point in being afraid of it. but a few techniques have to be learned before we reach for the brush. one is the wrapping technique, and an other the dipping technique involving a sponge.
dip, lift again, keep turning it while lifting. both techniques allow for great creativity, but require lots of practice. i’m going to begin with the cloth and get my hands dirty straight away. stick it in, have fun, then roll. sooo! man, that’s going to be a great living room! but painters aren’t simply born. as we all know, practice makes perfect. why did you become a painter? working with paint is very enjoyable.
you can test things out, see what looks good, try new combinations. yes, you’re always developing. development is our aim, too. enough practice, now we can get to work. we want to create a pattern on the wall that involves both wrapping and dipping. but first a few final preparations. the amount of objects that can be used is a bit overwhelming. in addition to painting utensils, a folding ruler, pencil and spirit level are all important. first, the area to be decorated has to be marked and masked off. how many men do you need to draw a straight line?
we seem to have an answer. two is actually too many, but it does need to be exact. it’s straight, we did it! great, because a painter has to work precise and accurate. otherwise you’ve to start all over again. wait a second, if we put a dot underneath, then it has to be a straight line, right? no, it’s not! the sticky tape really doesn’t work!
with preparations complete, the paint can be mixed. we want to use pink, mint green and light blue. the colours don’t come straight from the shelf, they have to be mixed in the right proportions. for lighter tones, mix bit by bit. “the more the merrier†is the wrong approach. finally we can get to work.first apply the background colour, so that no light spots arise, let it dry, then refine it with the dab and wrap technique.
and now? let it dry. let it dry a bit and then, if i remember rightly, comes the stencil. now a bit of dabbing. to give the wall an artistic look, we need a nice pattern or a wall tattoo, as you’d say today. it’s easy when you know the basics. punch the stencil in advance, then with the paint and dabbing apply it to the wall. when you see what’s possible, even as a beginner,
then i can only imagine the results after three years of training. whether as trainee or pro, working with paint is certainly great fun, and together with the customer you can bring wonderful ideas to life. looks good! thanks for the lovely day. that was my workshop with painters und i enjoyed it a lot. this occupation offers great variety, from delicate work with cloths, sponges or brushes, to attacking large surfaces with the roller, and much more besides.
anyway, i found it very informative and great fun. i’m already looking forward to showing you another occupational field next time. see you then. take care. bye!
