do you want to be able to show a dutchman around in your house? do you want to understand: what the real estate agent says? or the tour through the new house of yourdutch friend? stay tuned, i will teach you in a few minutes! my name is bart de pau. this is "1000 most common words in dutch",
an online course in basic dutch vocabulary with exercises on learndutch.org 40 lessons in each lesson 25 of the most frequently useddutch words. in this lesson we discuss the house. you learnt the word "het huis" already. another word is: [the house] that noun is derived from a verb
we learnt in the previous lesson: "wonen"= to live. do you remember? [the door] [the window] [the wall] [the chair] this is a famous chair by the dutch artistgerrit rietveld. as you can see the word "stoel" in dutch has a slightly different meaning than 'stool'in english.
we say: [the stool] [the table] [the lamp] and “de lamp†is significant for the dutchcity eindhoven; because of the company philips, which is a world leading manufacturer of electronic devices now, but it all started with the light bulb.
[the television] hey come on... the dutch are not living in the middle agesanymore. that's better. most dutch television programs are producedin hilversum which is half an hour drive from amsterdam. do you know someone from hilversum? yes you do... this guy! [the closet]
[the toilet] but we also use the word: please note that we pronounce it the frenchway. [the kitchen] [the stove] [the fridge] do you see how logical the dutch languageis? almost like mathematics: "koel" + "kast" = "koelkast". [the room]
[the living room] [the couch] the word "bank" also has a another meaning. exactly, as it is used in english. [the bedroom] [the bed] [the bathroom] in english, you say this, while you mean this. please note, we don't do that.
the dutch are very direct, without shame we say what it is: "ik ga naarde wc". [the shower] [the bath tub] [the scullery] almost all dutch houses have it as a separate room next to their kitchen. it is a place for the washing machine, the freezer, cleaning materials, shoe polish, and so on.
and it usually has a door leading to the garden. [the garage] [the garden] do you remember the prepositions "voor" and"achter" from lesson 12? the garden in front of the house is called"de voortuin". the garden in the back of the house is called"de achtertuin". [the attic] [the roof]
[at home] this is what i do: "thuis werken". to work at home. time for homework. and now you should be able to say what that word is in dutch. indeed "huiswerk, huiswerk." study the words and do the exercises on learndutch.org. if you liked the lesson
