hello, my name is jay with sonos customer care. today i'm going to guide you through setting up a sonos system from start to finish. before we start, you want to make sure you have your sonos products unboxed and ready to go. i'll be setting up a play:1 and a play:5 and i have those nearby. we'll also be downloading the sonos app. i'll be using an ipad, but you can also use an iphone, android, pc or a mac. before we download the app, decide where to place your players and plug them in to power. i'll be connecting my play:1 and my play:5 to my wifi network so i've placed them where they'll get good wireless signal.
if you aren't planning on connecting your sonos system to your wifi you can also connect it directly to your router. if so, make sure you have a boost or one of your players right next to your router. my play:1 and my play:5 are powered up and showing a flashing green light, which means they're ready to be set up. now let's download the app. to get the app, you can open up a web browser and go to support.sonos.com or you can open up the app store and search for sonos. now that the app is installed, let's open it up and start the setup process. we can begin by hitting "set up a new sonos system."
the app will ask what sort of setup we want to go through - a standard setup or a boost setup. i'm going to focus on a standard setup for this video which means i'm going to have my sonos system connect directly to my wifi network. if you wired a boost or a player to your router, this is where you want to press "boost setup." once i choose "standard setup," the app will show me the available players that are found nearby. i can pick between the play:1 and the play:5 by swiping between them. i'll choose the play:1 and start here. the app will ask us to press a couple of buttons on the player at the same time. pressing these buttons will start a temporary wifi network that we can connect our ipad to
so we can continue the setup. depending on what players you have, these buttons may be different. for the play:1 that we're setting up, we'll want to press the play/pause button and the volume up button at the same time. for others, like the play:5, you'll want to press the join button. but don't worry. if you aren't sure what buttons to press, the app will tell you. ♫ chime ♫ after pressing the buttons, the play:1 will show a flashing orange light and the app will ask us to confirm that we see it.
once we do, the app will show that the player is configuring. this means the player is getting its own wifi network started so we can continue the setup process. now we need to connect the ipad to the temporary sonos network. for some of you, this step may not be necessary. some devices, like android phones and tablets, can take care of this step for you automatically. some players, like the play:5, can also take care of this for you on their own. for this video, we'll continue to focus on how this works with the ipad and the play:1. once you see this screen, you can close out of the sonos app by pressing the home button. then go to your device's settings, then wifi.
you'll see a network in your wifi list called sonos. select it, and once you see the check mark confirming you're connected close out of settings and go back to the sonos app. sonos is now being set up on your wifi network and it will ask you for a password if necessary. if sonos is trying to join the wrong wifi network, there's a button at the bottom if you need to select another one. i've typed in my password, and once i select continue, i see a confirmation that it's been added. now we can select a name for this player. you can choose from a list of presets or you can type in your own name at the top. i'll name this play:1 "living room," and now we've finished setting it up on the network.
let's move on to the second player: the play:5. i've selected "add another player" and the app has detected that the play:5 is nearby. i'll press the join button on the back of the play:5 as prompted and the play:5 will connect to the system. like the play:1, i'll assign a name to my play:5 and continue. i don't have any more players to add, so when the app asks me if i have any more, i'll say "not now." at this point, both of my players are connected and now they're part of the same system. your sonos system needs to be registered to download updates and to add music services. i'll register my system here by providing my email address and my location. now i can start the trueplay setup process for both of my players since i'm using an ios device.
trueplay will tune each one of your speakers so you get the best sound in any room. we won't cover the whole process today, so i'll go ahead and tune my players so we can finish the setup process. i have both of my players set up, registered, and tuned. our last step is to add a music service so we can get some music playing on the system. when you select "add music services," you'll see a list of all the services available. i have apple music, so i'm going to select it from the list to add it to sonos. once it's added, i can select it from the music menu browse through its selections, or search for something to play. when i've found what i'm looking for, i'll simply tap on it to play some music.
♫ music ♫ if you have any questions, we at sonos customer care are always happy to help. you can visit support.sonos.com for lots of additional information as well as how to contact us. thank you, and enjoy your sonos system.
